Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the first novel in her beloved Regency-set series featuring the charming, powerful Bridgerton family— Look for BRIDGERTON, coming soon to Netflix。

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound。 From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood。 A proper duke should be imperious and aloof。 A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable。

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter。 The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London。 Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit。 But no one truly desires her。 She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen。

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings。 Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood。 Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option。 If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him。 Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar。

The plan works like a charm—at first。 But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty:

Love ignores every rule…

This was quite boring partly because I already watched the Netflix series but mainly because the characters here all seem like caricatures。 Parts about the Bridgerton brothers which is supposed to bring some levity just felt too cartoonish。 We are constantly reminded that Daphne has three brothers。 And it seems like she has hardly any connection with her sisters。 I especially did not like book Daphne, she seems immature at best and a emotional manipulator at worst。 She started out as a sound cha This was quite boring partly because I already watched the Netflix series but mainly because the characters here all seem like caricatures。 Parts about the Bridgerton brothers which is supposed to bring some levity just felt too cartoonish。 We are constantly reminded that Daphne has three brothers。 And it seems like she has hardly any connection with her sisters。 I especially did not like book Daphne, she seems immature at best and a emotional manipulator at worst。 She started out as a sound character and then did a completely 180 with zero empathy for her husband who had a traumatic childhood。 Simon was ok。 I liked that in the book version he is still struggling with the stammer。 You can sort of get his emotional make up and why he behaves the way he does。 But what I don’t get it how easily his internal wounds are healed and he is ready to have a kid a second letter。 That journey was not convincing at all。 After reading the entire series, I feel this is one of the poorer books。 I would even go on to say that this is skippable。 。。。more

Read the Bridgeton prequels before reading this 1st Bridgeton novel。 Actually, liked the Rokesbys series better and was disappointed this novel -- especially after all the publicity and build-up in the media。 The Rokesbys were much more believable, wittier and interesting。 Duke Bridgeton almost seemed to a bit contrived and predictable。 Maybe I missed something, so I'll read the next in the series。 Read the Bridgeton prequels before reading this 1st Bridgeton novel。 Actually, liked the Rokesbys series better and was disappointed this novel -- especially after all the publicity and build-up in the media。 The Rokesbys were much more believable, wittier and interesting。 Duke Bridgeton almost seemed to a bit contrived and predictable。 Maybe I missed something, so I'll read the next in the series。 。。。more

(this was a buddy read!)i didn’t have very high hopes w this lmao esp as i didn’t love the tv show either but the show was way more fun and exciting and made much better use of all the characters, but i also am v aware that romances are definitely not my genre so it’s not much that the book is at fault, this stuff is just not my favourite 。 but wasn’t a terrible read overall!

I put this on my list before I watched the first season on Netflix, but the queue was long so I forgot about it until now。 And I was curious to see how the book compared。And yes, the nonconsensual scene is here, as well。 Which is not a good look, obviously。 Interestingly enough, however, the book actually has Daphne ruminate on her actions a bit afterward, which didn't happen in the show。 That DOES NOT make this right by any means, just wanted to note the divergence here。Overall, it's silly enou I put this on my list before I watched the first season on Netflix, but the queue was long so I forgot about it until now。 And I was curious to see how the book compared。And yes, the nonconsensual scene is here, as well。 Which is not a good look, obviously。 Interestingly enough, however, the book actually has Daphne ruminate on her actions a bit afterward, which didn't happen in the show。 That DOES NOT make this right by any means, just wanted to note the divergence here。Overall, it's silly enough to pass the time with。 It's lightweight and good filler in-between more serious selections。And I'll probably read the next one, because I'm a sucker, haha。 。。。more

I am a romance fan, I am a Quinn fan, I am not a fan of this book。 I generally read the rake romances when reading a period work like these and had high hopes for Simon- he dashed them unfortunately。 Daphne was also not the general character I like to route for。 The plot line while being generally okay seemed to be missing some sort of untangled knot or resolution。 That said I have read random other books in the Bridgerton series/ prequels/ etc and loved them (like the girl with the make believe I am a romance fan, I am a Quinn fan, I am not a fan of this book。 I generally read the rake romances when reading a period work like these and had high hopes for Simon- he dashed them unfortunately。 Daphne was also not the general character I like to route for。 The plot line while being generally okay seemed to be missing some sort of untangled knot or resolution。 That said I have read random other books in the Bridgerton series/ prequels/ etc and loved them (like the girl with the make believe husband!!!) while disappointed in this series intro it will likely not keep me from reading other works by Quinn! 。。。more

I have mixed feelings about this novel。 I absolutely loved the beginning - all the witty and sarcastic comments。 Unfortunately(?), I really didn’t like the latter part of the novel - the characters seemed to dramatically change personalities and some situations occurred (which I won’t mention, due to spoilers) that I just cannot condone or get over。 The author did a great job starting out, but lost it towards the end。 After reading this novel, I am very interested now in how the Netflix show por I have mixed feelings about this novel。 I absolutely loved the beginning - all the witty and sarcastic comments。 Unfortunately(?), I really didn’t like the latter part of the novel - the characters seemed to dramatically change personalities and some situations occurred (which I won’t mention, due to spoilers) that I just cannot condone or get over。 The author did a great job starting out, but lost it towards the end。 After reading this novel, I am very interested now in how the Netflix show portrays the last bit of this tale。 。。。more

I needed something (what I had presumed to be) light with maybe a little side of spicy after reading a few heavy hitters prior to this one。 I’ll admit, I only put this on hold in the library system because I watched the show first。 Indeed, the show does follow some details loosely based on this book which was nice to notice as I read。 I did like Daphne more as a character in the book compared to her show counterpart - more standing up for herself which was nice to see。 Simon is a little question I needed something (what I had presumed to be) light with maybe a little side of spicy after reading a few heavy hitters prior to this one。 I’ll admit, I only put this on hold in the library system because I watched the show first。 Indeed, the show does follow some details loosely based on this book which was nice to notice as I read。 I did like Daphne more as a character in the book compared to her show counterpart - more standing up for herself which was nice to see。 Simon is a little questionable but the eventual sex scenes between him & Daphne were nothing to complain about。 It did bother me though that Anthony, Benedict (although he seemed more of a follower) and Colin felt the need to barge in to their sister’s life and automatically assume Simon was the one in charge when Simon had stressed a few times the two were partners, it’s their home (Daphne and his) not strictly just his。 I also wish (view spoiler)[ that someone tells these women more about sex?! Why the hell did they let Daphne assume the worst ? Was every women left in the dark this much? (hide spoiler)] The Featheringtons weren’t heavy duty players in this book, Lady Danbury barely and no French seamstress but overall - I think it accomplished what it was supposed to - British high society and the complexities behind it all。 Some plot developments I wish could have been taken out, (view spoiler)[ disappointed that the non consensual sex that Daphne was responsible for was still there (hide spoiler)] I also noted that So yeah, a few plotlines might have been taken away but overall, not a bad read。 。。。more

The r*pe scene definitely ruined it。。。 why would anyone include something like that in such a good romance。 Daphne and Simon had so much chemistry from page one, I found myself smiling the whole time。 The banter in between the main couple and the Bridgerton family had me laughing out loud。 Can't wait to continue with the rest of the series The r*pe scene definitely ruined it。。。 why would anyone include something like that in such a good romance。 Daphne and Simon had so much chemistry from page one, I found myself smiling the whole time。 The banter in between the main couple and the Bridgerton family had me laughing out loud。 Can't wait to continue with the rest of the series 。。。more

All was fun until chapter 11/12。 Honestly, I only read the book because of rege-jean。 I haven't watched the series yet, but I wanted a summer romance book。 The weather is nice, prompting a great background for reading romance。 And rege-jean is gorgeous!!! It was about daphne getting her way after she found out that he could have children, but did not want children。 It was not about Simon accepting love and affection that was not physical (fboi problem)。 Once she found out about his isolating, troubled childhood。 Her mission was to use her own personal "good family" experience。。。to shut off his concerns/troubles, and to make it his problem。 Yes, this man needs love, but please don't convince me that having a child was his decision。 I couldn't even read past chapter 12 because it was all scheming in an uncomfortable way。 #SIMONDESERVESBETTER and therapy。 Obviously, I knew there would be some scheming。 BUT to pawn it off as a personal choice is just。。。ugh! Where is her growth?! She stayed the same and stuck in her ways (beyond wanting a child)。 The second after he told her that he could not have a child。 Her first thought, "maybe he is wrong。 maybe he went to the wrong doctor。 I will find a way"。 Her problem is that she only listens to what she wants, and not what is actually being said。 Exhausting! (Obviously, Simon needed to deal with his father controlling his life, but to center, the lasting chapters about them having a child is trite at best)。 I also do understand that during that time producing an heir/child was all that mattered。 Still, ugh! (hide spoiler)]Simon has all of the backings of a fboi, I agree。 Bad relationship with his father。 Somewhat mysterious because he says just enough to make you intrigued。 We learn that this was because he stuttered。 But dang, I thought he deserved a better partner。 #simondeservesbetter I am exhausted after reading/listening to this book。 I will not continue reading the series。 Rege-jean is still great。 I might just watch the show only for him, and a couple of people。 I will fast forward during daphne's part。 (maybe I will like her better in the show?! who knows。) Blah! Onward to another book。 Edna said it best "I never look back darling。 It distracts from the now"。update: after reading some of the reviews about the rape scene and there being no consequences。。。I knocking off another star。 I could not read past chapter 11/12, and I skipped to the first sentence of the epilogue。 Then, closed the book。 Nope, I will not continue this series。 #simondeservesbetter 。。。more
